2000-2011 CAREER BABES
Inspired by the way post-feminist women had subverted idealised, sexually objectifying mass media and advertising images of femininity in order to compete and succeed in contemporary society, Career Babes and Sports Career Babes defined many of the social, political and sexual themes that still run through my work. Now and again, over the past decade, I have revisited the series to re-examine its central themes and to review my feelings about them. The original Career Babe series was a reaction to the Girl Power movement of the late '80s and early '90s, with its slogan, Girls Can Do Anything (later appropriated by Mattel when they re-launched the Barbie doll).
